Hello! 🙂 With 35 Years experience and an HND in Advertising & PR from Central College of Commerce, now known as Glasgow City College. Before embarking on a career in Advertising, Sales and Marketing for 25 years to climb the ladder of success in the corporate world with some of the UK’s highest selling newspaper titles rising through the ranks to become a deputy assistant manager by the age of 32.
But in April 2016 my amazing son was born. That corporate job meant I missed all the major milestones in my sons life. His first words, his first steps, his first nativity play. I was a single parent with a mortgage and sole bread winner just a few weeks before he was due to start his first day of school I got hit with not one but two MAJOR curveballs that derailed my plans. His Dads parents (he never paid a penny in child maintenance) it was tough there were times I went without food to make sure my son had nappies and milk. His parents had offered to look after him to take him to school as they lived around the corner, which would allow me to go to work as childcare was another mortgage! It was simply unaffordable. I was lucky to have £50 per month left after paying all my bills, mortgage and travel costs. (I was in tears at the local nursery) when I found out the costs. and as a Deputy Manager it meant I had to be in the office at 8am to arrange setting up the leads for the sales staff.
The government at that time offered 2 hours per day paid childcare placements but you couldn’t combine it into one day for example. I requested to work part time but that request was knocked back so I had no other option but to go to work I had a mortgage to pay. But I was hit with the news for personal reasons they could no longer take him to school, my son has rarely if ever, spent a night at his Grandparents house. His Granny took him one day a week on a Monday but my Mum who lives 160 miles away doesn’t drive had given up her job as a carer to look after her Mum who had a stroke and a heart attack. 24 hour carer she couldn’t do anything for herself. My Mum god bless her had her hands full as it was with no car she had to go down the town to buy in the shopping on a bus (no online deliveries in those days). And come back up on the next bus. She offered to look after my son for me to allow me to go to work to make sure my mortgage got paid. Without my Mum I have no idea where I’d be.
